Our Story

WaunaBoom began with two neighbors sharing a vision for a Fourth of July celebration unlike any other. Sparked in 2015 by then-Village Board President Chris Zellner and long-time resident and teacher Stacey Ryan, the idea quickly grew.

With support from the Village of Waunakee, a dedicated committee, an incredible team of volunteers, and generous sponsors, their vision came to life on July 4, 2016.

What started as a modest fireworks show has become a beloved tradition—a free, joy-filled celebration where families, friends, and neighbors gather to share in the spirit of Waunakee. More than an event, WaunaBoom reflects the heart of our village: connection, pride, and shared purpose. In 2025, WaunaBoom was nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of "The 16 Best Places to Go for the Fourth of July."

Our Dedication

WaunaBoom 2025 is proudly dedicated to Waunakee’s Hometown Heroes—the veterans, active-duty service members, and fallen heroes who have served our country with courage, commitment, and sacrifice.

This year, we extend our deepest gratitude to those who serve or have served and the families who stand beside them. During the celebration, we invite our community to gather at the main stage by 2 p.m. for a ceremony including military flyovers, a dedication walk, and moments of gratitude.

Later in evening at 6 p.m. the skies above WaunaBoom will come alive again with a parachute jump tribute, honoring these heroes.

Explore the interactive Hometown Heroes map to see the commemorative banners across Waunakee. Because of their service, we can gather, celebrate, and belong.
